Rosicrucianism is one of the most intriguing mystery traditions in Western culture. Known as ‘the most jealous of all secret societies,’ Rosicrucianism emerged in 17th-century Kassel, Germany, as a Christian reform movement after the publication of three anonymous manifestoes announcing the secret ‘Brethren of the Rosy Cross’ (hence: Rosi-crucian). These writings sparked controversy across Europe, with persons such as René Descartes, Francis Bacon, and Jan Amos Comenius accused of being initiated into the Rosicrucian mysteries.
Many apologetic documents were produced during the period supporting the Rosicrucian call for a universal reformation based on teachings associated with the Kabbalah, Hermetic philosophy, and alchemy: documents that are filled with beautiful and puzzling images revealing the marrow of Rosicrucian secrets.
