Limitations and alternatives

Despite our best efforts to ensure accessibility of the Embassy of the Free Mind, there may be some limitations. Below is a description of known limitations and potential solutions. Please contact us if you observe an issue not listed below.

1. Articles and event imagery.

Some images may not meet minimum contrast requirements between text and background imagery, which may make content difficult to read for users with low vision or colour vision deficiencies, because content is contributed by a wider editorial team, and contrast ratios in photographic or artistic imagery cannot always be controlled. The site design incorporates gradient overlays and tints to improve text contrast over imagery and minimise these occurrences. Additionally, all contributors have received accessibility guidelines for content that specify contrast ratio requirements. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if a specific image or piece of content is causing difficulty, and we will do our best to provide an alternative.

2. Images across the site.:

Some images may be missing alt text, not correctly marked as decorative, or may have limited descriptions where symbolic or artistic content makes a comprehensive description difficult. A wider editorial team contributes some content, and alt text compliance cannot always be guaranteed; additionally, the complexity of certain collection imagery makes thorough description challenging. All contributors have received accessibility guidelines, and the site has been configured to encourage alt text entry at the point of upload where possible. Alt text and heading structure have been audited, and we continue to monitor this on an ongoing basis. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if you encounter an image without adequate alt text or require a more detailed description of a specific item, and we will address it promptly.

3. Articles, events, exhibitions, and other CMS-managed content.

Heading structure within editorially managed content may not always follow a logical hierarchy, which can affect navigation for screen reader users because a wider editorial team contributes content, and heading usage cannot always be guaranteed. Contributors have received guidelines on correct heading structure, and the site CMS has been configured to encourage correct usage where possible. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if you encounter content that is difficult to navigate, and we will review and correct the structure.

4. Main navigation, including dropdown menus and mobile navigation.:

Navigation behaviour may vary across different screen readers and browsers, and cannot be fully guaranteed in all combinations because Complex navigation patterns interact differently with assistive technologies depending on the browser and screen reader combination used. We have implemented ARIA roles and keyboard navigation support throughout the site. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if you experience difficulty navigating the site, and we will assist you in finding the content you need.

5. Scroll animations, parallax effects, and page transitions.:

Motion effects may cause discomfort or difficulty for users with vestibular disorders or motion sensitivity because Animated effects are used throughout the site as part of the design language, and the site does not currently implement a reduced motion option. We are investigating options to support the prefers-reduced-motion setting in a future update. If you experience difficulty due to motion effects, please contact us at info@efm.amsterdam, and we will do our best to assist.

6. Weglot-translated pages in Dutch.

Machine-translated content may occasionally be inaccurate or unnatural, which may affect comprehension for users relying on translated content, because Translations are generated automatically and are not always reviewed by a native speaker. Key pages are reviewed and manually refined where possible. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if you encounter a translation that is unclear or incorrect, and we will prioritise a manual review.

7. Tickets, Digital Collection, membership and donation forms, and other third-party embeds.:

Embedded third-party tools may not fully meet accessibility standards and may not be compatible with all assistive technologies because these tools are provided by external parties, and EFM has limited control over their accessibility compliance. Where we have more direct influence, such as with the Digital Collection, we raise accessibility requirements with providers directly. More broadly, we prioritise established third-party tools with strong accessibility track records. We continue to review alternatives where concerns arise. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam if a third-party tool is inaccessible, and we will do our best to provide an alternative means of completing the task.

8. PDFs and downloadable documents.:

Older PDFs may not be screen reader accessible or properly tagged because Many documents are historical scans or third-party files not produced by EFM. Reviewing and updating key documents on an ongoing basis. Contact us at info@efm.amsterdam, and we will provide an accessible alternative.
