Duality, Union, and Creation: The Story of Fuxi and Nüwa

Fairytales and myths are among the most accurate descriptions of our personalities and life journeys. Rich in metaphors providing personal guidance with themes of Calling, Redemption, Curse, and Return, we can open up our imagination.

The creation myth of Fuxi and Nuwa provides the fundamental Chinese view on masculine and feminine energy, together with their energy interplay. Fuxi and Nuwa are siblings from the same mother. A flood occurs, and to save the humans, they need to form a union, which will be a second union by choice, i.e., marriage. They hesitate due to their being siblings and are not sure that the heavens are really intending that brother and sister marry. They light a fire on the next mountain top and go to observe. Should the smoke tendrils intertwine, they see their marriage to be sanctioned; should the smoke go straight up, they should not marry. In other words, if smoke stays unrelated no marriage, but if smoke intertwines/relatedly, they should marry. Participation in an old creation myth, i.e., how to bring fruit from dualities, is by participation.
